Situated off the coast of Nilaveli in Trincomalee, Pigeon Island is one of Sri Lanka’s two marine national parks.
Historical & Cultural Background:
The island was named after the rock pigeons that nested there. It was declared a sanctuary in 1963 and upgraded to national park status in 2003 due to its coral reef ecosystem.
