Minneriya is one of the best places in Asia to witness wild elephants in large herds, especially during the dry season.

The park is centered around the ancient Minneriya Tank, built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century AD to irrigate the area. The tank now sustains a lush ecosystem for wildlife.

- During the dry season (July–October), hundreds of elephants gather here, known as “The Gathering.”
- Over 200 species of birds and many reptiles also inhabit the park.
- Safari jeeps allow up-close but respectful encounters.

Expect to see elephants, crocodiles, deer, and birdlife. Early morning or late afternoon safaris offer the best sightings.
