Famous for its large elephant population, Udawalawe is located on the border of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces.
Historical & Cultural Background:
Established in 1972 to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir, it’s one of the best places in Asia to see elephants in the wild.
Unique Facts or Anecdotes:
- Home to over 600 elephants
- Also shelters crocodiles, deer, jackals, and over 180 bird species
- Adjacent to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned calves are rehabilitated

- Elephant herds roaming freely

- Elephant Transit Home for young rescues (outside the main park)
Tips for Visitors:
Morning safaris are best for sightings. Bring sun protection and a zoom lens for photography. Combine park visit with the Elephant Transit Home.
