Famous for its large elephant population, Udawalawe is located on the border of Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces.


Historical & Cultural Background:

Established in 1972 to provide a sanctuary for wild animals displaced by the construction of the Udawalawe Reservoir, it’s one of the best places in Asia to see elephants in the wild.

  1. Home to over 600 elephants
  2. Also shelters crocodiles, deer, jackals, and over 180 bird species
  3. Adjacent to the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned calves are rehabilitated
