Historical & Cultural Background:

Originally a royal pleasure garden during the Kandyan Kingdom, it was formally established as a botanical garden in 1821 by the British. Today it’s the largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka and serves both scientific and leisure purposes.

  1. The giant Java fig tree is a photo favorite due to its enormous spread.
  2. A section is dedicated to orchids, with over 300 varieties.
  3. The gardens were once used as a military headquarters during WWII.
